The anatomy of this character is rather flat and cut-out like. Think of any figure as a 3-D object rather than a silhouette. When drawing the snout, for example, think about what the skull and jawbone would look like. It's a problem I sometimes have when drawing animals. Also, remember that the ears are not just tacked on to the head, but lobes that grow out of it and surround holes that are the insides of the auditory system.

To create the illusion of depth, of course you need to learn to shade and highlight. To do this, just paint with lighter or darker colors; don't use dodge, burn, or gradients because that is considered lazy.

Last but not least, the tail looks like it is growing out of the side of his body. When drawing the tail it's important to consider the spinal column because that is what the tail is part of. You have to know where the tail-bone starts and how the tail takes up space, and how long it is. The stripes need work as well since they look flat, when they should be curved in a way that gives the illusion of roundness.

If you study enough tutorials, you will be able to make a better picture regardless of what type of program or other tools you use.
